Why ESPN insider won’t rule out Drew Allar starting for Steelers in 2027

The Pittsburgh Steelers are stuck in an awkward quarterback situation once again. Nobody knows if Aaron Rodgers will return to Pittsburgh for the 2026 season. The Steelers drafted Penn State QB Drew Allar to give themselves a bit of insurance in case Rodgers retires. One NFL insider thinks that pick could pay dividends for the Steelers in 2027.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano published an article where he judged overreactions to individual picks and overall team grades following the draft.

Graziano ruled that the idea of Allar starting for Pittsburgh in 2027 is not an overreaction.

“Pittsburgh seems to believe Rodgers will return and play a second season for the team, but so far he has not,” Graziano wrote. “If he does — and if he stays healthy all season — Allar should get a chance to sit and develop for a year at least. But the Steelers still likely will need a new quarterback in 2027, by which point Rodgers will be 43 years old and probably done at long last, right?”

Allar’s main competition at this point are Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. But if Rodgers rejoins the team, he will immediately become the starting quarterback.

Pittsburgh’s coaching staff may want to nurture Allar during his rookie season to become the team’s future starter. Regardless of what Rodgers decides to do.

“Can McCarthy bring Allar along this year even as he works to coach a contender with (presumably) Rodgers as the starting QB? It’s not out of the question,” Graziano concluded. “Knowing what we know about the Steelers’ QB situation at the moment, you can’t rule out the possibility of Allar starting in 2027.”

The Steelers could have a quarterback battle on their hands during training camp this summer.
