Why Celtics superfan Matt Damon felt Knicks’ championship was like a ‘musical’

Even though he’s a fan of the Boston Celtics, acclaimed actor Matt Damon was happy for the New York Knicks after their championship.

Speaking to Lad Bible, Damon claimed the Knicks winning a championship was “like being in a musical.” He vividly described the scene.

“When the Knicks won, I went out into the street with my kids, and it was like being in a musical,” Damon said. “The cops and the firefighters were hugging each other. It was unbelievable, and I was like, ‘Maybe the world should be like this.’ It felt like everyone was about to break into some horrible number.

“I mean, even as a Celtics fan, it was impressive. It was a lot of joy,” he added.

In Damon’s lifetime alone (he was born in 1970), the Celtics have won seven championships, so he has seen his fair share of title celebrations. That speaks volumes to the Knicks fans’ celebrations if he was impressed.

Damon was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, so he is a Celtics fan. He is also known to be a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots.

The Knicks’ first championship win in 53 years

In 2026, the Knicks won the franchise’s first championship since 1973. They ended their drought after beating the San Antonio Spurs in five games.

This was also the Knicks’ first appearance in the NBA Finals since 1999. They similarly played the Spurs in that series, though they lost in five games.

Jalen Brunson was named NBA Finals MVP for his efforts. He averaged 32.6 points per game in the Finals. Brunson scored 45 points while making more than half of his shots in Game 5, which clinched the series.

Now, the Knicks will try to win back-to-back titles during the 2026-27 season. The starting five will look the same, but the bench will be different after the departure of Mitchell Robinson.
