What was on White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas’ mind before walk-off home run vs. Tigers

When Miguel Vargas came up to bat in the bottom of the 10th on Friday night, he had only one thing on his mind: win the game.

With the Chicago White Sox down to their final out against the Detroit Tigers, Vargas came through in the clutch, launching a two-run walk-off home run to left field to clinch a 4-3 win at Rate Field. The blast, his 13th homer of the season, scored automatic runner Drew Romo and capped a three-RBI performance for the White Sox infielder.

“Winning was all I got on my mind,” Vargas said after the game.

His first career walk-off hit helped Chicago improve to 30-27, a season-best three games above .500. Vargas had already contributed earlier in the contest, driving in Chicago’s first run with an RBI double in the third inning. His late-game heroics came after the White Sox went through the motions for most of the night despite collecting 10 hits. Chicago went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position through the first eight innings and was held to one run against Tigers starter Troy Melton, who allowed one run on six hits across seven innings.

Detroit took an early lead behind Dillon Dingler’s two-run home run and later moved ahead 3-2 in the 10th inning on Zack Short’s sacrifice fly.

Trailing 2-1 in the ninth, the White Sox tied the game on Rikuu Nishida’s sacrifice bunt. Andrew Benintendi scored from third after Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson made an errant throw home while attempting to prevent the tying run.

The comeback carried added weight after Chicago lost first baseman Munetaka Murakami to right hamstring tightness in the third inning. Murakami, who entered the game with 20 home runs, is expected to miss time and undergo further evaluation.

Detroit elected to pitch to Vargas in the 10th despite having an open base, and he made them pay. Facing Drew Anderson, Vargas connected on a 391-foot homer that handed the Tigers their fifth extra-inning loss of the season and saddled Anderson with his second blown save.

The White Sox lineup continues to produce power, becoming one of only two teams this season with three players owning at least 12 home runs.

In the second game of the series Saturday, Detroit will hand the ball to LHP Framber Valdez (2-3, 4.28 ERA), with Chicago countering by starting LHP Anthony Kay (4-1, 3.96 ERA).
