What Tigers’ Tarik Skubal said about his shouting match with White Sox player
The Detroit Tigers were excited to see starting pitcher Tarik Skubal back on the mound Friday. Skubal looked sharp in a game against the Chicago White Sox, striking out eight over five-plus innings of work.
At one point in the game, Skubal left the mound and began jawing with a player in the Chicago White Sox dugout. The emotion was pouring out of the Tigers ace.
“I’m a competitive guy,” Skubal said, per The Athletic. “I kind of wear my emotions out there, and that’s part of how I play the game. I think that’s just baseball. … It is what it is. It happened. It’s over with.”
The person Skubal appeared to be sparring with is White Sox pitcher Mike Vasil.
“I think it was some pretty choice words,” Vasil said, “and then I shared back some choice words. It was good stuff.”
Detroit’s manager didn’t mind seeing his ace get worked up like that.
“We know where we’re at, and what that brings is a ton of emotion in itself,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “Usually, you can multiply it with Tarik.”
Skubal is back working for the team after having surgery some weeks ago on his elbow. He has worked his way back from this significant injury at an astonishingly fast pace. Skubal has also been the topic of constant trade rumors.
The Tigers pitcher felt good overall about what he was throwing Friday.
“I felt like this was the first start that I’ve had this year where I felt like I kind of ran out of gas a little bit late in the game,” Skubal said. “And that’s good. I think that’s great for me in terms of building my volume to where, a couple starts from now, I feel like I’m healthy and ready to go.”
Detroit won Friday’s game 4-3. The Tigers then turned around and won another game from the White Sox on Saturday, 4-1. Detroit is now 32-44 on the season.
