What really excites Eagles’ Vic Fangio about Jonathan Greenard addition

With NFL free agency, the NFL Draft, and rookie minicamp officially in the books, Philadelphia Eagles fans have begun to count down the days until they can see the 2026 iteration of their team take the field for meaningful snaps.

With a chance to address the media for the first time since the draft, reporters asked returning defensive coordinator Vic Fangio about his newest weapon, Jonathan Greenard, and what he brings to the table, with the veteran assistant coach noting that numbers aren’t the only way the former Minnesota Vikings edge can impact a game.

“That he’s been a good pass rusher. He’s been productive in the rush,” Fangio declared via NBC’s John Clark. “He’s had years where he’s had good numbers sack-wise, but like we always discuss, pressure on the quarterback is also important, and he’s been able to do that throughout his career. I think he’s strong on the edge versus the run game. We’re excited to have him, but I think there’s a lot of good there.”

Fangio also had some nice things to say about one of his returning edge rushers, Jalyx Hunt, who is expected to play a major role on the team in his third year. Asked what he expected from Hunt as he prepares to enter a contract year in 2027, Fangio noted that he’s also excited about his game, as there’s a lot to like about his development.

With Jaelan Phillips leaving the City of Brotherly Love for a massive $120 million contract with the Carolina Panthers, the Eagles really did need to add another rusher to a room that also features Hunt, Nolan Smith, and a returning Brandon Graham. While only time will tell if Greenard can recapture his double-digit sack form from 2023-24, if Fangio is this excited, fans should be too.
