What Rangers’ Jacob deGrom said about knee injury scare after grinding out Mariners start
As there has been some injury concern with Texas Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom this season to start, he would make a start against the Seattle Mariners and pitch well in the 2-1 win on Monday. While deGrom missed his first start with the Rangers, there could have been a danger to miss Monday’s start, as he gives insight into what he was dealing with.
Before the game against the Mariners, manager Skip Schumaker would say that deGrom “felt a little something” when it comes to his right knee. While it wasn’t serious enough for him to miss the start and didn’t impact him during the game, there was still a consensus that Texas didn’t want to push it, as deGrom pitched five innings.
“We were contemplating the sixth [inning],” deGrom said, according to MLB.com. “I said I can do it. We decided to just make sure it’s fine … It’s a little tender, but I think we’ll be OK.”
How Rangers’ Jacob deGrom pitched in the win over the Mariners
In the five innings he pitched, deGrom struck out six batters, only allowing one earned run, which was a home run off catcher Cal Raleigh. Other than that, deGrom was on the money, but Seattle put up a “battle” as the veteran pitcher said.
“It was a battle tonight,” deGrom said. “Logan [Gilbert] threw the ball great. I gave up the homer to Cal, and I was like, ‘All right, we better lock this in. This might be a close game.’ Obviously, any day you’re able to put this uniform on — I said this before — you gotta be thankful. I’ve missed plenty of time in my career. I was thankful to make 30 starts last year. The goal is to do it again this year and in the next couple of years.”
At any rate, the Rangers are 5-5 to start the season, as the win over Seattle on Monday to start the three-game series, which continues on Tuesday night, was much-needed after getting swept by the Cincinnati Reds.
