What Kevin Stefanski said about Falcons’ Michael Penix Jr.’s rehab at OTAs

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. recently provided an optimistic update on his recovery from a partially torn ACL and MCL in his left knee.

The 26-year-old signal-caller has been throwing the football since mid-March and feels that he is on track with his recovery.

However, he acknowledges that his knee is not yet ready to absorb any physical contact.

Penix is aiming for a return by Week 1, which will play a significant role in determining his status as he competes with offseason acquisition Tua Tagovailoa for the starting quarterback position.

During this week’s Organized Team Activities (OTAs), head coach Kevin Stefanski clarified the team’s careful approach to managing Penix’s workload.

According to a report by Josh Kendall on X, Penix has not yet received medical clearance to participate in full eleven-on-eleven team sessions.

Instead, he is currently limited to seven-on-seven passing drills. Stefanski aimed to alleviate any concerns by stating that while Penix is not yet at 100% health, he is exactly where the medical staff expects him to be at this point in the spring.

As shared by Will McFadden on X, Stefanski highlighted that Penix will continue to focus solely on individual position drills and seven-on-seven concepts until it is appropriate for him to participate in full-team scrimmages, in accordance with his recovery timeline.

While the coaching staff remains cautious during practice, Penix recently gave fans a reason to celebrate his progress off the field.

Over the weekend of May 2, he married his longtime partner, Olivia Carter.

Videos from the reception showed him moving freely and dancing late into the night without any visible limitations.

Teammate Kyle Pitts even captured Penix taking part in the team’s signature Swag Surfing dance on his Instagram Stories, which is a very encouraging sign for his overall knee rehabilitation.
