What Aces’ Becky Hammon said about Chennedy Carter’s frustrations with not closing

As the Las Vegas Aces acquired Chennedy Carter in the offseason, she is further proving to be an impressive player in the league, especially after the 85-84 win over the Atlanta Dream on Sunday. With the Aces looking to add another ring to the team’s history, there was an interesting story coming out of Sunday’s win, dealing with Carter.

In the win over Atlanta, Carter would score 20 points off the bench, shooting seven of 13 from the field, one of two from deep, to go along with three assists and two rebounds. However, she would log just over five minutes in the fourth quarter, even saying after the game how “disappointed” she was in not closing the game, with head coach Becky Hammon explaining the decision was a defensive-centric one.

“I haven’t talked to her, so that’ll be a conversation for me and her down the stretch. I went with the big defensive lineup…She didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just the way the game played out, and we’re about winning at the end of the game, so there’ll be times she’ll be out there, there’ll be other times where she won’t be out there,” Hammon said in her post-game press conference, via the team’s YouTube page.

Carter was visibly disappointed in her short presser, saying that while she’s happy that the Aces won, she would’ve liked to see her close out the game. Hammon would also talk about how Carter has been ‘growing’ in Las Vegas’ system, wanting to see her work more on the defensive side, while complimenting the offense.

“She’s a bucket, so putting her in those positions and letting her go to work,” Hammon said. “She knows mostly I’m on her for the defense…I know she can score the ball…So we’re just kind of letting her be her, as well as we’re going to continue to coach her up on the defensive end.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen how Carter’s role evolves with the Aces as the next game is on Saturday night against the Los Angeles Sparks.
