West Virginia football’s Rich Rodriguez has priceless reaction to Coastal Carolina QB’s comeback bid

While West Virginia football defensive lineman Darius Wiley was carted off the field on Saturday afternoon during the 31-24 win against Coastal Carolina, the program squeaked by a win after a comeback attempt by the Chanticleers. With the West Virginia football program retiring the jersey of Pat White also on Saturday, head coach Rich Rodriguez would have a funny reaction to the quarterback at Coastal Carolina after the contest.

It wouldn’t be a close game in the first half as the Mountaineers had a commanding 24-0 lead, but the second half saw Coastal Carolina quarterback Deuce Bailey turn it up a notch, leading the team to four scoring drives. Throwing for 373 yards and three touchdowns, West Virginia wouldn’t excel on offense, but a fourth-quarter touchdown would give them enough room to secure the win.

After the game, Rodriguez would go to Bailey and give him his props, even telling him that humoursly that he doesn’t want to see him again.

“Rich Rodriguez really wanted to find Coastal Carolina quarterback Deuce Bailey after the game. Bailey led a late comeback that came up short against WVU,” Spencer Ripchik wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“I don’t want to see you anymore,” Rodriguez said to Bailey.

With the efforts of Coastal Carolina’s Bailey and even their defense, the Chanticleers outgained the Mountaineers in total yards, 425-413. There’s no denying that some West Virginia football fans are not feeling too comfortable about the win, but Rodriguez will take the victory nonetheless, citing it as a teaching moment.

“If anybody wants to cry about a win, they can cry about a win,” Rodriguez said, via ESPN. “I’m glad we can teach off a win and get better for next week.”

The Mountaineers look to get better in Week 2 against UT Martin on Saturday, Sept. 12.
