Warriors rumors: How franchise feels about Stephen Curry’s contract extension request
The Golden State Warriors recently had their 2025-26 season come to an unceremonious end with a loss to the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament. It was a rough game for point guard Stephen Curry, who couldn’t ever find a way to get his shot off consistently against the Suns’ defense after putting together an elite game against the Los Angeles Clippers two nights prior.
Heading into this offseason, there are plenty of questions about what the future holds for Curry, who indicated after Friday’s loss in Phoenix that he plans to play multiple seasons into the future, and recently, Ramona Shelburne and Anthony Slater of ESPN reported on how the franchise views things heading into possible extension talks.
“Curry has one season and $62.6 million left on his current contract but is eligible for an extension of up to two seasons this summer… Team sources indicated a plan to discuss an extension with Curry later in the summer,” they reported.
When he’s healthy, Curry remains one of the most productive point guards in the NBA, but that is becoming an increasingly large caveat, with the star missing a large chunk of this past season due to a lingering knee issue and seeing last season’s playoff run derailed by a hamstring ailment.
The trio of Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green played well together when they were on the court, but banking on them to stay healthy for a full season might not be a risk worth taking, and as Shelburne and Slater noted, the three players alone make up about 80 percent of the team’s payroll.
In any case, the Warriors will have some big questions to answer as the offseason gets underway, particularly regarding their franchise player.
