Adam Silver memes fly after once again delivering harsh justice on Clippers

With the NBA’s punishment handed down to the LA Clippers on Wednesday regarding the league’s investigation into possible salary cap circumvention when the team signed Kawhi Leonard, it was merely the organization’s second rodeo with commissioner Adam Silver.

The Clippers first run-in with Adam Silver came during the 2013-14 season when the first-year commissioner banned former owner Donald Sterling for life while fining him $2.5 million and and forcing a sale of the team. Amid the news of the punishment levied against Clippers owner Steve Ballmer and other members of the organization, fans took to social media in jest to proclaim that the commissioner seems to love making the Clippers miserable.

Jokes aside, it just so happened that two of the biggest challenges for Silver during his tenure thus far as NBA commissioner have come from the Clippers organization. A problematic owner and a potential cap circumvention scandal are definitely major issues.

It should also be noted that the punishment handed down to the Clippers is pretty much in line with former NBA commissioner David Stern’s ruling in the Joe Smith cap circumvention case with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2000.

The Timberwolves were stripped of five first round draft picks and then owner Glen Taylor and general manager Kevin McHale were both suspended for one year. In a way, it could be argued that Silver’s judgement was not as harsh as Stern took a step further and voided Smith’s contract with the Timberwolves. He would end up signing with the Detroit Pistons instead.

The only punishment that Kawhi Leonard received individually was being fined $700,000. Following the NBA’s decision, one of the next biggest issues is revisiting the previously agreed upon trade between the Clippers and the Raptors.
