Orioles suffer brutal walk-off loss amid playoff push as Rockies play spoiler

The Baltimore Orioles are competing for an American League Wild Card position. They surely entered Colorado against a lackluster Rockies team hoping to at least win two out of three games, and possibly even earn a sweep. Instead, the Orioles suffered a brutal walk-off loss in the series finale on Wednesday, a defeat that led to the Rockies earning a 2-1 series win.

With the Rockies down to their final strike, Brett Sullivan came through with a walk-off two-run single to give the Rockies a 6-5 win. A clutch Colton Cowser home run robbery saved the Orioles in their win to begin the series on Monday, but they have now dropped two consecutive contests. If Cowser did not save Monday’s 2-1 win, the Orioles may have ended up getting swept.

Baltimore now holds a 69-71 overall record. The O’s are in fourth place and 15 games back of first place in the American League East division. However, they are still only two games back of the final AL Wild Card spot.

The Cleveland Guardians currently hold that final AL Wild Card position. Meanwhile, the Texas Rangers also trail Cleveland by two games while the Toronto Blue Jays are 2.5 games back. The Guardians and Blue Jays are currently playing in Cleveland, so one has to imagine the Orioles will be paying attention to that game.

There is still plenty of baseball left to be played in 2026, but the Orioles need to find ways to get the job done against teams like the Rockies. With that being said, the Rockies deserve credit as they look to play the role of spoiler against contending ball clubs.
