Vikings rumors: Why ‘best outcome’ of QB battle could be J.J. McCarthy beating Kyler Murray

The Minnesota Vikings will be an exciting team to watch during training camp. Minnesota will have a quarterback battle between incumbent J.J. McCarthy and newcomer Kyler Murray. One NFL insider explained what the best-case scenario could be for the Vikings just a month before training camp kicks off.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano weighed in on this offseason’s biggest overreactions in his latest article. He does not agree with the notion that McCarthy has played his last snap for the Vikings.

Graziano argued that there’s still a chance for McCarthy to win the starting job during training camp. It could even be the ideal outcome for Minnesota.

“McCarthy could prove to be the better option in camp. If that happens, the players on the roster will see that and buy into the decision,” Graziano wrote. “You could make the case that the best outcome for the Vikings is for McCarthy to win the job and become the player they thought he could be when they moved up to draft him. But even if that doesn’t happen in camp, Murray is far from a perfect solution, which is why the Cardinals are paying him $36 million this year to play for someone else.”

McCarthy has an edge over Murray because of his familiarity with Minnesota’s scheme and personnel. However, Murray’s big advantage over McCarthy is his NFL experience and higher ceiling.

Neither player was entirely healthy in 2025. Murray dealt with a foot sprain last season while McCarthy battled through multiple ailments.

Everything should come down to how each quarterback performs during training camp. Minnesota’s coaching staff may also give each quarterback significant snaps in the preseason to help make a decision.

The Vikings may prefer that McCarthy wins this quarterback battle. But ultimately, the best man for the job will win.
