Vikings rumors: Insider makes notable prediction for Kyler Murray-JJ McCarthy QB battle

The Minnesota Vikings have left mandatory minicamp without a solution at quarterback. Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy are still battling it out for the starting job heading into the 2026 season, and it appears that war will be waged well into training camp.

Murray took a bit of issue with the competition after a tough first day of minicamp, but he had a point. The former No. 1 overall pick talked about how the lack of starters reps, especially with a new team, is hurting his ability to get used to the offense.

Kevin O’Connell has said that this competition will go into the summer and possibly into the preseason, but this is a Vikings team that has aspirations of getting back to the playoffs this season. If it didn’t, it wouldn’t have brought Murray in.

While the competition may seem far from over at the moment, NFL insider Albert Breer isn’t expecting the competition to drag on too long for that reason.

“Yes, O’Connell wants to be fair, and he flat-out said this week that the competition is going to carry into the summer. But at the same time, Murray put words to the elephant on the couch in any such competition,” Breer wrote. “To be fair to the quarterbacks and the other 10 guys in the offensive huddle, eventually, there’s going to be a point where giving the team its starting signal-caller will be the best thing for everyone.

“Which is why I don’t think this is going to drag out late into the summer.”

Murray is certainly one of the most talented quarterbacks in the NFL, but a foot injury derailed his 2025 season. He has been on an overall downward trajectory for a few years now, but he will be hoping that playing under O’Connell can turn his fortunes around.

Even with his recent struggles, Murray is the rightful favorite to enter next season as the starter after McCarthy struggled to play winning football in 2025. But as long as the competition is raging on, the possibility remains that Murray may be relegated to the bench.
