Vikings QB Kyler Murray delivers honest review of JJ McCarthy relationship

For the first time in his NFL career, Kyler Murray is sporting something else other than the red and black of the Arizona Cardinals. Murray was released by the Cardinals this offseason and singed a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings as he looks to re-establish himself as a starting quarterback.

However, the starting job in Minnesota isn’t going to be handed to Murray. He will have to compete with former top-10 pick JJ McCarthy for the starting spot. McCarthy has had an injury-riddled first few seasons in the NFL, but he has also been underwhelming when he has been on the field. That gives Murray the early edge in the competition, but there is a long way to go until Week 1.

Of course, one of the key dynamics to watch whenever you have a quarterback competition like this one is the relationship between the two in the locker room. On Wednesday, at Vikings OTAs, Murray spoke for the first time about his relationship with the former Michigan star, via Alec Lewis of The Athletic.

“It’s been great. Obviously, he’s a younger guy, so any way I can help him, I feel like I played seven years going on eight,” Murray said. “I’m considered a veteran even though I don’t see myself as that. Giving him any knowledge he needs.”

McCarthy was also asked about his relationship with Murray, and his answer was a little different. He compared it to a high school situation that made it a bit awkward.

Of course, there is bound to be tension between two talented and competitive players that both badly want this job and have a lot to prove this season and beyond.

Who wins this job could also come down to what the Vikings are looking to get out of this season. If Minnesota wants to compete right now and get back in the NFC playoff picture, Murray is probably the best option. However, if the Vikings are more focused on the future, maybe McCarthy will get some more looks. Regardless, this will be a fascinating dynamic to watch this offseason.
