Trey McKenney returning to Michigan after championship run

Coming off a 2026 national championship, Michigan is swiftly building its roster, with a centerpiece returning. Guard Trey McKenney confirmed on Friday that he will be back for his sophomore season with the Wolverines after previously making his intent known during the NCAA Tournament.

McKenney played in all 40 games during Michigan’s title-winning campaign, operating primarily as a reserve but maintaining a consistent impact. He averaged 9.9 points and 2.8 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per game, while shooting 46.2% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range. His perimeter shooting was a crucial asset, as he knocked down a team-high 68 three-pointers over the season.

McKenney’s production increased considerably during the NCAA Tournament, where he averaged 12 points in 25.2 minutes per game and shot 48% from beyond the arc. In the Wolverines 69-63 win over UConn for the national title, he finished with nine points, eight rebounds, and came through in the clutch with a game-changing late-game sequence that included a defensive stop, a go-ahead three-pointer, and two free throws to clinch the victory.

A former McDonald’s All-American and 2025 Mr. Basketball winner in Michigan, McKenney entered college as a four-star recruit ranked No. 21 nationally. He quickly adapted to the college level, scoring 21 points in his debut and adding 17 in an early-season win over Gonzaga.

His role expanded late in the season after LJ Cason suffered a torn ACL, forcing McKenney into additional ball-handling responsibilities.

With starting point guard Elliot Cadeau also returning, the Wolverines retain a large portion of their backcourt production. Departures, including Nimari Burnett and Roddy Gayle Jr., create opportunities for McKenney to step into a starting role. His return ensures continuity for a program coming off its second national title and positions him for an even larger role in 2026-27.
