Timberwolves rumors: NBA Draft trade buzz grows in search to help Anthony Edwards
It became evident in the playoffs that the Minnesota Timberwolves needed to surround Anthony Edwards with more talent. While the roster has productive players, they were not enough as a supporting cast for Edwards to get them over the hump.
Julius Randle and Naz Reid can score, but they lack consistency. Rudy Gobert is limited offensively. Jaden McDaniels, Ayo Dosunmu, and Terrence Shannon Jr. have promise, but they are not there yet. Mike Conley Jr. is past his prime.
The Timberwolves fell short in the playoffs for five straight seasons, and it may be time for retooling. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Minnesota is pushing to trade its No. 28 pick for a plug-in player.
“The Stein Line has learned that Minnesota is very much in conversation to move its No. 28 selection, with rival teams saying that the Wolves are searching for another ballhandler to bolster their backcourt,” wrote Stein on his Substack.
“If the Wolves were to move down but not out of the draft completely, league personnel have pegged Sergio de Larrea from Valencia in Spain as a prospect prominent on Minnesota president Tim Connelly’s radar.”
ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has de Larrea at No. 28 in the latest edition of his mock draft.
“Sergio De Larrea is trending up the week before the 2026 NBA Draft, with many believing he has locked himself into being a first-round pick. At 6’6″ with a 6’9″ wingspan, de Larrea is a bigger guard who actually fits in with the Minnesota Timberwolves really well,” wrote Siegel.
The 20-year-old guard is coming off an impressive stint with Valencia, including being named Liga ACB Best Young Player. He declined offers from big-time college programs in the United States.
He could fit in right away, as Conley is the only natural point guard on the Timberwolves.
