Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has chance to join Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, LeBron James in exclusive MVP club

On Sunday morning, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania reported that Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had won the NBA MVP award for the 2025-26 season. It was the second straight year in which SGA won the award, and the news comes just one day before the Thunder kick off their Western Conference Finals series against the San Antonio Spurs.

Now, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has reported on the historic company that the superstar has a chance to join this year if the Thunder’s success on the court continues.

“The only players to ever win back-to-back MVPs and back-to-back titles are Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has a chance to join them this year,” noted Siegel on X, formerly Twitter.

Gilgeous-Alexander was once again a superstar all year for a Thunder team that finished with the best record in the NBA for the second year in a row and has plowed through the first two rounds of the playoffs with ease, currently sitting at 8-0 in the postseason.

SGA had a relatively quiet series against the Lakers, at least by his standards, due to Los Angeles’ frequent double-teaming of him as soon as he stepped across halfcourt, but he is still clearly the head of the snake for a Thunder team that looks like it has a chance to be a dynasty.

The one team that may have a chance of stopping those plans is the Spurs, who recently completed a six-game series victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves and beat the Thunder on four out of five occasions in the regular season this year, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated conference finals matchups in years.

Game 1 of that series is set for Monday evening in Oklahoma City.
