Thunder’s Mark Daigneault reveals 2 feel bad factors vs. Victor Wembanyama in Game 2

After watching San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama get pretty much whatever he wanted Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Mark Daigneault went back to the drawing board to try to slow the 7-foot-4 sensation down in Game 2.

To Daigneault’s credit, the Thunder were able to hold Wemby under 30, finishing third on his team with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and four blocks, but after tying up the series at 1-1, OKC’s head coach wasn’t in love with how the game went, as there were two factors that raised red flags.

“Well, I thought the other night, and in the regular season, having Wigs on him was effective in the macro. The other night, he just had Wigs, and much of it was restricted. But if you zoom out, you can turn the ball over a ton. He ended up 101 points in regulation. They actually shot pretty well. The quality of shots were what we would want, other than his stuff at the rim,” Daigneault said.

“But two things that just didn’t feel good were his stuff at the rim. It just felt too sustainable. And so we got to make some corrections there. It won’t be the last time we have a Wigs on him. We have Wigs on him a couple of sessions tonight. And then the other thing that doesn’t feel good is playing (Hartenstein) 12 of this. It just didn’t feel good to me. But in order to get him extended past that, that’s a matchup. And so we decided to start with it.”

At the end of the day, when playing against one of the very best teams in basketball, a win is a win. But the Thunder don’t only need one win, they need four, so identifying where things can get better is a crucial part of securing win No. 2 and beyond, starting on Friday in San Antonio.
