Thunder news: SGA makes a Chet Holmgren promise after Game 4 loss to Spurs

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is arguably the most unstoppable offensive force in today’s NBA. Allegations of being the NBA’s most prominent flopper notwithstanding, Gilgeous-Alexander can get to his spots at will and punish defenders like no other. But even the best players in the league need help, and this was ever so apparent in the Thunder’s 103-82 loss against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 4 of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.

In Games 2 and 3, the Thunder bench stepped up and gave Gilgeous-Alexander the requisite scoring support amid Jalen Williams’ injury and Ajay Mitchell’s struggles. With Mitchell joining Williams on the sidelines in Game 4, OKC needed unsung heroes to step up yet again. And with the bench failing to make much of a positive impact, Chet Holmgren’s shortcomings on offense stood out even more glaringly.

Holmgren, after scoring just 10 points on Sunday, is averaging just 11.3 points through the first four games of the WCF. Suffice to say, the Thunder need more out of him, and Gilgeous-Alexander vowed to get him more involved in Game 5.

“Chet is an easy target to find, so probably just finding him more in the dunker or when he’s spacing. Just put him in better positions to use his strengths as an offensive talent. I don’t know exactly what that looks like because I just got done playing. But watching film, we’ll find ways, for sure,” Gilgeous-Alexander said, via Justin Martinez of The Oklahoman.

Holmgren’s off-the-bounce game isn’t very refined, so he’s having troubles finding his offense in this series. His ability to space the floor and his mobile feet don’t stand out as much as they did in the Los Angeles Lakers series, as Victor Wembanyama is able to suffocate nearly anything Holmgren does on offense.

But Holmgren has the responsibility to step up, being one of the team’s stars, and there’s no better time for him to start doing so than on Tuesday night at 8:30 PM E.T.
