‘This is real’ – NFL legend to return five months after retirement in shock twist
NFL icon Frank Ragnow is coming out of retirement to rejoin the Detroit Lions, according to widespread reports.
The 29-year-old quit the sport in June, citing health issues and family reasons.

It came after seven straight seasons with the Lions which saw him selected for the Pro Bowl four times.
Fans were sent into a frenzy on Wednesday night as the Lions posted an image of Ragnow on social media with no context.
Moments later, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport posted: “This is real. Frank Ragnow is coming out of retirement.”
He then added: “Sounds like he’s in shape and ready to roll sooner, rather than later.”
According to ESPN, Ragnow’s return had to be decided by Wednesday in order for the offensive lineman to be eligible for the Lions’ remaining games this season.
It marks a shock twist for Ragnow, who retired at the top of his game just five months ago.
Posting on Instagram at the time, he said: “I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good but I’m not and it’s time to prioritize my health and my families future.
“I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t. I have to listen to my body and this has been one of the hardest decisions of my life.”
After being drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Lions, Ragnow started 96 games but struggled with injuries, including an ‘inoperable’ toe problem that curtailed his 2021 season.
Ragnow had just earned second-team All-Pro honors for the third time in his career and was widely considered one of the best centers in the NFL.
Graham Glasgow was moved from guard to replace Ragnow, but has struggled to step into his shoes.
The Lions are currently third in the NFC North with seven wins and four defeats.
While their Thanksgiving Day fixture against the Green Bay Packers is expected to be too soon for Ragnow, he could return against the Dallas Cowboys on December 5.
Jubilant Lions fans flocked to the comments section of their team’s post to share their delight at the early Christmas present.
One wrote: “Just shed a tear in front of hundreds of people at work.”
Another said: “This is what Bulls fans must have felt like when [Michael] Jordan came back!”
