The shocking numbers showing Rutgers loss to UMass is one of worst in history

Thursday night was supposed to be a cakewalk for Rutgers as they faced UMass. However, they suffered a demoralizing 37-21 defeat.

But the scoreboard didn’t tell the whole story.

It turns out that UMass snapped two losing streaks en route to victory, per Chris Vannini of The Athletic. UMass came into the game on a 16-game losing streak dating back to 2024. They were also on a 23-game losing streak against FBS teams.

Plus, UMass was a 29.5-point underdog going up against Rutgers. But they ended up winning by 16 points, which, according to Vannini, is a 45.5-point swing.

In addition, UMass is coming off one of the worst seasons in program history. Last year, they finished at 0-12. Plus, among nine winless teams, the 2025 UMass team came in last, per Jason Kirk of The Athletic.

So to sum it all up, the loss couldn’t be any worse.

The game took a turn in the second quarter, when UMass outscored Rutgers 17-0 after finishing the first quarter tied, a touchdown apiece.

In the fourth quarter, Rutgers mounted a run to score 14 points, but it wasn’t enough.

Senior QB Dylan Lonergan was 16-for-29 in pass completions for 242 yards with 2 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Junior RB Antwan Raymond recorded 42 rushing yards on 14 carries.

Junior WR KJ Duff, who announced his return in January, recorded 3 touchdowns on 9 receptions for 196 yards.

Altogether, Rutgers and UMass have played six games since 1967, and the series is now tied at three.

Next Friday, Rutgers will play against Boston College at 6:30 pm CST/7:30 pm EST.
