While former New York Mets star Pete Alonso is finding his power stroke with the Orioles, the guy who replaced him has battled injuries. And here is the eye-popping stat amid Jorge Polanco’s continued injury absence, according to a post on X by Amazin’ Army.

“In 7 full seasons with the Mets, Pete Alonso missed a total of 24 games. In his first month and a half with the Mets, Jorge Polanco has missed 26 games.”

That about sums things up pretty sweetly. Or perhaps sour is a better description for Mets’ fans. Polanco was signed to fill the void at first base after Alonso took his talents to the Orioles.

Despite a slow start, Alonson has totaled eight homers and 22 RBIs in 154 at-bats with the Orioles. As for Polanco, he has only 56 at-bats with one home run and two runs batted in. That’s quite a difference.

Polanco landed on IL in mid-April because of a wrist injury. However, a recent development with the Achilles means he won’t return as early as the team hoped.

Typically a second baseman, the 32-year-old signed a two-year, $40 million contract to play first base for the Mets, according to ESPN.

“(The Mets) told me that I’d be playing a good amount of first base, but that I could also be bouncing around,” Polanco said. “I was offering my services to teams as a first baseman, second baseman, (or) third baseman. So when the Mets asked if I was able to do that, play a little bit of first, play a little bit third, I was definitely willing to do that.”

Alonso signed with the Orioles, getting $155 million over five years. He had been a fixture in the middle of the Mets’ lineup for seven seasons. He hit 53 homers as a rookie in 2019. And he never had fewer than 34 in any full season with the team.

The Mets entered Monday with a record of 15-25, standing in last place in the NL East.
