Liberty’s Chris DeMarco puts positive spin on boos from fans before Aces game
With the New York Liberty waiving Betnijah Laney-Hamilton amid a frustrating season, there has no doubt been a myriad of reactions from the basketball world on the matter. In the aftermath of the Liberty’s release of Laney-Hamilton, it appears that the fans have made their thoughts known on the matter.
Before New York beat the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday, 111-71, fans of the team were heard giving “vociferous boos” towards head coach Chris DeMarco, according to ClutchPoints’ reporter Kris Pursiainen. There is no denying there has been disappointment with how Laney-Hamilton’s situation was handled.
“There were sparse but vociferous boos for Liberty head coach Chris DeMarco during their starter intros. Fairly or not, the coach has become the face of the organization’s management of the end of Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s tenure. Fans made themselves heard,” Pursiainen wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
DeMarco would be asked after the win over the Aces about the reaction, as before Breanna Stewart would say “Welcome to New York,” the head coach took the fans booing in a positive spin.
“They love their team. They want us to be successful, and we have had a lot of success, and we love our fans. It’s crazy in there; you hear when we make a run,” DeMarco said, via Myles Ehrlich.
At any rate, Laney-Hamilton is now with the Washington Mystics after the Liberty waived her, as the focus for the player is on her new chapter. As for New York, the team has won seven of its last eight games, as the hope is to keep the momentum going in the next game against the Indiana Fever on Tuesday.
