The ironic reason behind Caitlin Clark ‘snub’ in viral WNBA poster

The WNBA probably did not expect that a simple poster would spark a massive uproar.

The league on Wednesday released a poster on X to celebrate its 30th anniversary. It featured 20 former and current stars and the logos of all the 23 teams that have played in the WNBA. It is being sold for $30 as part of the anniversary merchandise.

Fans quickly noticed that one player was missing: Caitlin Clark. Instead, the league put Sophie Cunningham to represent the Indiana Fever.

The absence of Clark did not sit well with many, which made the poster go viral. Fans blasted the WNBA, stating that it was a blatant form of disrespect for the two-time All-Star.

However, Darren Rovell, a sports business analyst, claimed that the WNBA was forced to leave out Clark.

“The reason why Caitlin is not on this poster is—you ready?—Caitlin Clark herself. Other than Nike, Clark allows licensees like Wincraft, which makes this, to only use her name and number. Not her likeness,” said Rovell, who used to work for ESPN.

“Moving on. The ‘disrespect’ card was fun for a day.”

The WNBA or Clark has yet to comment on the poster.

The 24-year-old Clark signed an eight-year contract worth $28 million with Nike in 2024, just days after she was drafted by the Fever as the No. 1 pick.

It is not outlandish to argue that Clark may be the most popular player in league history, and not seeing her on a poster to commemorate the 30th anniversary did look strange. But as they say, there is always a story behind every picture.
