Pirates’ Jared Jones shares frustrations after dreadful outing vs Mets

The Pittsburgh Pirates are losing ground in the NL Wild Card race, and losses like the one they suffered on Sunday against the New York Mets aren’t helping the cause one bit. The Pirates were on the receiving end of a demolition from the Mets, losing 11-1 after starting pitcher Jared Jones couldn’t get it together on the mound.

Jones lasted just three innings on Sunday after he allowed eight earned runs on six hits and three walks while striking out just three. This horrendous start is coming off of two consecutive starts in which he allowed three runs, and this is most certainly not the kind of performance the Pirates need as they look to keep in step with their peers in the postseason race.

After the game, Jones was brutally honest with what went wrong with his performance and why he allowed the Mets, the team in last place in the NL East, to carve him up the way they did.

“Got behind just about everybody. Feel like I really couldn’t control any at-bats. Stuff just got away from me, and I couldn’t make an adjustment,” Jones said, per Jason Mackey of MLB.com.

Jones was already in a rather poor headspace after his previous start, when he allowed three runs in four innings in a 4-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. He called his performance “terrible” and even went as far as to use an expletive to describe his poor play. But this night against the Mets was undoubtedly worse considering the quality of the opposition.

On the season, Jones is sporting an ERA of 5.03 in 13 starts (59.0 innings). He needs to undergo a bit of a mental reset so that he could right the ship on the mound.

With this most recent defeat, the Pirates are now 5.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot with five teams ahead of them in the standings.
