Bet of the Day

Plymouth to beat Exeter @ 4/9

Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City were League One rivals last season. However, while the Pilgrims enjoyed a strong end to the campaign to finish eighth, the Grecians were relegated and are kicking off the new campaign in the fourth tier.

The EFL Cup is unlikely to be a priority for these sides with promotion top of the agenda, but a strong run could be key to building momentum from the outset of the season.

With home advantage and more quality among the ranks, Tom Cleverley’s Pilgrims should have enough to advance to the second round with a victory on Monday night.

Bet Builder

Plymouth vs Exeter – Under 2.5 goals, both teams to score – no & over 9.5 corners @ 17/4

Plymouth have been productive in pre-season, winning five local friendlies and holding Championship Bristol City to a goalless draw.

While summer results don’t always indicate how a team will perform when the season starts, two of the victories were by a single goal, so backing under 2.5 goals could prove a smart bet.

Argyle haven’t conceded in four matches, recording a shutout against the Robins, so betting on both teams to score – no, may be a sound choice. The Grecians mustered only 52 goals in 46 matches last season and could struggle to hit the back of the net at Home Park.

The Pilgrims took more corners than any other team in League One last season. Recording an average of more than 11 per game and Cleverley will be aiming to take advantage of set-pieces again.

Exeter also averaged more than 10 each match, so Monday’s match producing over 9.5 corners looks likely.

Santa Clara to beat Nacional, Djurgardens to beat Vasteras, Silkeborg to beat Odense and Botev Plovdiv to beat Spartak Varna @ 15/1

In Portugal, Santa Clara host Nacional and are favourites to record an opening game victory, having beaten the White and Black 2-0 in their last home league game in May.

Djurgardens are going well in Sweden and can leapfrog Hammarby into second place by beating Vasteras. The Blue Stripes are unbeaten in five, winning four, and can add another victory to the run.

Silkeborg host Odense in Denmark and had the beating of the Striped last season, winning three and drawing one of the their meetings. SIF can be confident of earning the three points and bounce back from last week’s defeat by Copenhagen.

In Bulgaria, Botev Plovdiv can build on their victory over Cherno More with another home triumph over Spartak Varna. The nation’s oldest club has an opportunity to climb into the league’s top five should they win.
