Texas football bolsters defense with latest 2027 commitment
Texas continues adding to its growing 2027 college football recruiting class, adding its second key edge-rusher to the group. Four-star defensive end Derwin Fields is the latest high schooler to announce his commitment to Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns.
Fields chose Texas out of his list of final five schools on Saturday, On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett first reported. He chose the Longhorns over Ole Miss, Miami, Tennessee and Georgia, which rounded out his top five. Fields also received offers from Florida, Auburn, LSU, Nebraska and UCLA, among others.
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Fields is one of the top prospects in the state of Mississippi, which seemingly gave Ole Miss a significant edge in his recruitment. Fields is the 20th-best edge-rusher of the class of 2027, according to 247 Sports, and No. 22 on On3 Sports.
Fields is coming off a stellar junior season at Brookhaven High School, in which he recorded 56 tackles, 16.0 sacks, 26.0 tackles for loss and two batted passes per MaxPreps. His speed off the ball is what impresses scouts most about his game, along with his crisp hand technique.
Fields joins Texas native Cameron Hall as the first two edge-rushers joining Texas’ 2027 college football recruiting class. Hall is also a four-star prospect who committed to his home team in January.
In total, Sarkisian has locked up nine recruits for his 2027 class, which is currently rated 11th in the country on 247 Sports. The group is led by five-star receiver Easton Royal, who is a consensus top-15 player of the recruiting class.
Texas is currently working with the seventh-best recruiting class in 2026, per 247 Sports. Sarkisian continues to keep the ball rolling into his sixth year in Austin.
