Tarik Skubal’s hilarious question for Kevin McGonigle after $150 million contract extension

The Detroit Tigers gave top prospect Kevin McGonigle an eight-year, $150 million contract extension on Wednesday, shortly after he made his MLB debut this season. Not long after the deal was announced, teammate Tarik Skubal asked McGonigle a hilarious question during a press conference.

While the 21-year-old shortstop was fielding questions with media members on Wednesday, Skubal managed to sneak in a question of his own for McGonigle. The Tigers’ ace asked McGonigle if he would be planning on buying the entire team dinner at some point during the club’s four-game series against the Boston Red Sox on the road, according to Detroit-based sports reporter Logan Reever. McGonigle apparently claimed he would.

“So we have two day games in Boston over the weekend,” stated Skubal. “Are you planning on taking out the boys for dinner?”

“It was a resounding ‘yes,’ [from McGonigle]” reported Reever.

That dinner will likely take place on either Saturday, April 18, or Sunday, April 19. Both of those contests are day games in Boston and would provide the perfect schedule for the entire team to enjoy dinner on Kevin McGonigle’s behalf. Friday’s contest is scheduled in the evening, and the Tigers have to head back to Detroit after Monday’s game, as they have a new series beginning on Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers.

McGonigle earned his new contract just 17 games into his major league career. He’s looked every bit of a star infielder so far, recording 19 hits, one home run, and eight RBIs, giving him a .311 batting average and a .417 OBP through 61 at-bats. He’ll have a chance to improve those numbers on Wednesday when the Tigers take on the Kansas City Royals in the second matchup of a three-game series.
