Suns’ Collin Gillespie calls out ‘bad take’ on Devin Booker’s impact

Collin Gillespie had a breakout campaign with the Phoenix Suns last season after struggling to carve out a role in his first years in the NBA. Some even considered him a candidate for Most Improved Player after putting up career-best numbers.

In his third season, he averaged 12.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.2 steals in 80 games, including 58 starts. He shot 40.1% from long range.

He was a perfect complement to Devin Booker, who continued to be the go-to guy for the Suns. A podcast, however, belittled Booker’s impact on the team.

“Book affects one part of the game very strongly: Scoring. He doesn’t do that in defense. He doesn’t do that in playmaking to the level that it takes to take your team all the way. He can affect one phase of the game, not all three,” claimed the podcast.

Gillespie did not approve. He shared it on X and wrote “Bad take” in the caption.

Booker had another stellar season, putting up 26.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 6.0 assists in 64 games. He remained the driving force of the Suns with his two-way acumen.

Perhaps more importantly, his selflessness helped improve the numbers of Gillespie, Dillon Brooks, Royce O’Neale, and Jordan Goodwin, all of whom averaged career-highs in scoring.

With Booker leading the charge, the Suns had a 45-37 record and returned to the playoffs after a one-year absence. They, however, were swept in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Phoenix will enter the new season with a retooled roster, adding Miles Bridges, Luke Kennard, and Koa Peat.
