That is a joy Jose Mourinho experienced in the first La Liga game of his second spell as Real Madrid manager.

The Blancos headed into the closing stages of their clash with Espanyol with the score locked at 1-1. They looked set to drop points in their first outing of 2026/27, giving Barcelona and Atletico Madrid the chance to pull ahead of Madrid early on.

Then up popped Carlos Espi to score the decisive goal of the game in the 90th minute.

A relatively unheralded signing in a summer which also brought Yan Diomande, Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, it was the former Levante man who stepped up when Madrid needed him most.

It was not entirely smooth sailing for Madrid, but they were worthy winners. Now they are targeting a second consecutive victory in a midweek match against Real Sociedad.

La Real went down to a 1-0 loss to Real Betis in their first encounter of the new campaign, as Pellegrino Matarazzo began his first full season at the helm with a disappointing result.
