Steelers’ Aaron Rodgers gets message from Kevin Durant with retirement decision looming

Recently, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2025 season came to an end with a blowout loss at the hands of the Houston Texans at home in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. It was an ugly performance for the Pittsburgh offense, which managed to put just six points on the board and allowed multiple touchdowns from the Texans defense in this one, resulting in Mike Tomlin stepping down as the Steelers head coach the following day.

Now, all eyes are on Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and what he will choose to do, with many speculating that he will opt to call it quits on his career this offseason.

Recently, another aging superstar, Kevin Durant of the Houston Rockets, had a message for Rodgers as his decision looms.

“If he comes back and plays, that would be amazing, but if not, he had 21 years in the league. Come on, man. That’s a generational athlete in my opinion, someone who can last that long at that high of a level at that position. That’s incredible,” said Durant, via The Up & Adams Show w/ Kay Adams, per Kay Adams on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, Rodgers’ poor performance on Monday night for the Steelers won’t do anything to undo what has been an incredible legacy he has built in the NFL, but it would be understandable if he wanted to play one more year in order to go out on a less sour note.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how the Steelers will view a potential Rodgers return, considering that the team now has to find a new head coach, who might be looking to turn the page and embrace a rebuild rather than embarking on another year with an aging veteran at quarterback.

Clearly, the Steelers have a lot to sort out before next season gets underway.
