Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama joins legendary big man club in Game 4 vs. Thunder

Victor Wembanyama came, saw, and conquered in Game 4, leading the San Antonio Spurs past the Oklahoma City Thunder, 103-82, at Frost Bank Center on Sunday to tie the Western Conference Finals at 2-2.

Wembanyama was visibly dejected after their loss in Game 3 and issued a stern challenge to himself. He did not disappoint in Game 4, tallying a game-high 33 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and three blocks.

He scored 25 points in the first half to set the tone for the Spurs, who have yet to lose three straight games this season.

The 22-year-old Wembanyama is averaging 30.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.0 blocks. According to the NBA, he joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players in league history to average at least 30 points and 10 rebounds through their first four games in the conference finals.

Abdul-Jabbar played in his first conference finals in 1971 with the Milwaukee Bucks. They went on to win the championship against the Baltimore Bullets. Olajuwon, meanwhile, suited up in his first conference finals in 1986 with the Houston Rockets. They advanced to the NBA Finals but lost to the Boston Celtics.

He imposed his will right from the onset, puncturing the Thunder’s defense with his aggressiveness. Wembanyama took 16 shots in the first half, including a buzzer-beater from halfcourt in the second quarter.

Amid the exhaustive duel, the Defensive Player of the Year acknowledged the “chess match” between the Spurs and the Thunder, noting that the best-of-seven series has been “very fun.”

Game 5 returns to Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
