Spurs star Victor Wembanyama gets brutally honest on Game 2’s final shot vs. Knicks
The San Antonio Spurs came up just short as the New York Knicks stole Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals, 105-104, taking a 2-0 series lead after a thrilling finish in which Victor Wembanyama’s late mistakes proved costly.
Wembanyama finished with 29 points on 11-for-19 shooting, including 22 points in the second half after a quiet first half where he recorded as many turnovers (2) as made field goals. Though off on the wrong foot, Wembanyama helped San Antonio stay alive deep into the fourth quarter.
The Spurs erased a 14-point deficit by scoring 14 straight points to tie the game, setting up a tense final minute. Wembanyama then converted a driving basket while drawing contact to give San Antonio a 104-102 lead with 57 seconds remaining.
New York responded immediately. Jalen Brunson, who finished 7-for-25 from the field, tied the game at 104-104 with a fallaway jumper at around 39 seconds left. That set up the closing sequence involving Wembanyama.
With about 30 seconds remaining, Wembanyama took a contested long two-pointer from the left side while attempting to go for a quick score. The shot missed. On the ensuing possession after a Brunson miss, Wembanyama grabbed the rebound but threw an outlet pass that struck Stephon Castle in the back, leading to a turnover. Brunson was fouled with 9.5 seconds left and converted a free throw to give the Knicks a 105-104 lead. On the final possession, Wembanyama had another look but missed the game-winning jumper at the buzzer.
“Of course, I liked the shot. I feel like in this moment, you need to shoot to score,” Wembanyama said after the game. “In moments like this, it’s like results matter more than process, if you know what I mean. We just need to score. I just need to score. That’s the whole point.”

Karl-Anthony Towns led New York with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Mikal Bridges scored 20 points. OG Anunoby also made a crucial late fourth-quarter impact with a two-handed dunk over Wembanyama during the Knicks’ response to the Spurs’ run. Mitchell Robinson was also used defensively on Wembanyama in the final minute.
De’Aaron Fox scored 20 points for San Antonio and supplied a late assist on the inbound play to set up Wembanyama’s last shot opportunity. Rookie Dylan Harper played 32 minutes and contributed 15 points.
New York extended its postseason winning streak to 13 games. The Knicks also became just the third team in NBA Finals history to win the first two games on the road, joining the 1993 Chicago Bulls and 1995 Houston Rockets, both of whom went on to win the championship.
The series now shifts to Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Monday night.
