Tigers’ prospect acquired in Tarik Skubal trade gets big injury update

Right-handed pitching prospect River Ryan was part of the package the Los Angeles Dodgers sent the Detroit Tigers in the Tarik Skubal trade. Ryan has been recovering from a hamstring injury but it seems as if he could return before the season comes to an end. Making the decision to trade Skubal was difficult for Detroit, but they are hopeful that Ryan can emerge as a star down the road with the team. According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, Ryan could begin a rehab assignment soon.

“River Ryan is set to throw a bullpen this weekend,” Stavenhagen reported Friday. “Tigers are hopeful he can get into rehab games soon. ‘We would love for him to pitch in the big leagues,’ A.J. Hinch said. Sounds like Ryan could still pitch as a starter. Maybe middle to latter third of the month?”

Ryan was among the Dodgers’ top prospects before the trade. It is worth noting that he is already 28 years old. Despite being an older prospect, Ryan features a high ceiling. He’s only made four total big league appearances, as he pitched to a 1.33 ERA in those four starts with the Dodgers in 2024. He turned in a 4.46 ERA across eight outings at Triple-A this season.

Injuries have impacted Ryan, but he could become an impactful big league pitcher if he can find a way to stay on the mound once he returns. The Tigers clearly believe in him, as he was part of the trade package for arguably the best pitcher in the sport.
