Spurs panic meter after shocking Game 1 loss to Timberwolves in Anthony Edwards’ return

On Monday evening, the San Antonio Spurs fell behind 0-1 in their second round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves by a score of 104-102. While the sky isn’t falling just yet, the Spurs should still have a healthy level of concern moving forward in this series.

Panic meter: 5

The Spurs had several things go poorly for them in this game, including most notably the poor shooting of both Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox. The two stars combined to shoot just 10-31 from the field, including 0-12 from beyond the three-point line, in this game.

While some of that can be attributed to good defense from the Timberwolves, it’s still highly unlikely that San Antonio’s top duo will perform this poorly again from the field, and Wembanyama at least partially made up for it on the defensive end of the floor by recording an astonishing 12 blocks.

However, on the flip side, concerns about San Antonio’s crunch time offense were not quelled in this game, as the Spurs largely went stagnant down the stretch of Game 1, before a last-minute surge gave them a chance to win. San Antonio is now 0-2 in the two down to the wire games they’ve played so far in this postseason, which some thought was a concern for the team heading into these playoffs.

Meanwhile, the fact that the Spurs dropped this one with Ayo Dosunmu and Donte DiVincenzo out, and Anthony Edwards clearly very limited, likely doesn’t bode well for their chances moving forward, along with the fact that they’ve now lost home court advantage. Perhaps no team has seen an increase in quality from their first round opponent to the second like the Spurs have, and that certainly could take some time to get used to.

Still, overall, the Spurs shouldn’t act as if the sky is falling after one loss. After all, the team lost home court advantage early on in their last series, and ended up faring just fine.
