Southampton head into Tuesday night’s Championship play off second leg as favourites for victory after ending the season as the second tier’s form team.
Tonda Eckert’s side picked up more points than any other team across the division since his initial appointment as caretaker manager back in November following the sacking of Will Still when the club were just one place above the relegation zone.
The Saints’ draw in the first leg means they are now unbeaten in their last 21 matches against Championship opposition, with nine wins in their last 12 home games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough are now undefeated in their last five matches but three of those have ended in stalemates, with only two wins in their last 11 in all competitions.
However, Kim Hellberg’s side were by far the better team in the first leg, dominating in almost all stats but just couldn’t find the back of the net from any of their 21 shots in the match. Despite missing out the victory it was no doubt a morale boosting performance for them.

Middlesbrough striker Tommy Conway ended the season in fantastic form for the Yorkshire side, scoring four goals in last four games of the regular season, including three in his last two and came within the width of the post of adding to his goal tally for the campaign which currently stands at 13.
Southampton’s leading striker for Tuesday’s clash will be another Scottish striker, Ross Stewart.
The Saints star has scored 10 goals in just 14 starts for the Hampshire side this season including notable goals against Premier League sides Arsenal and Fulham in their run to the semi finals of the FA Cup.
Throughout his career, every time Stewart has scored against Middlesbrough, has side has gone on to win the game.
