Sources: Jaylen Brown has not requested Celtics trade amid offseason rumors

The Boston Celtics have been exploring multiple avenues to improve their championship outlook this NBA offseason, including the idea of possibly trading five-time All-Star and 2024 Finals MVP Jaylen Brown. However, league sources close to the situation told ClutchPoints that Brown has not approached any member of the front office or team president Brad Stevens to ask for a trade.

Over the last several weeks leading up to the 2026 NBA Draft, the Celtics have shown a willingness to discuss potential trades involving Brown with other teams. Before he was traded to the Miami Heat, the Celtics made a strong push to trade for two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, offering a package that included Brown and future draft assets, sources said.

The belief of rival executives in the days leading up to the Milwaukee Bucks trading Giannis was that the Celtics would only be willing to part ways with Brown if they were to receive a superstar talent in return who would immediately improve their championship outlook paired with Jayson Tatum, like Antetokounmpo.

Now that the Bucks’ star was traded to Miami, and other players of his magnitude are not currently on the trade market, rival front-office personnel who spoke to ClutchPoints are downplaying the chances of him actually being traded this summer.

Even so, Stevens and the Celtics’ front office continue to listen to inquiries coming their way from teams expressing interest in Brown, according to ESPN. The Celtics have not completely ruled out a deal involving Brown this offseason, with teams continuing to engage in trade conversations surrounding the star forward.

Among those with interest in the Celtics’ two-way star, ClutchPoints has learned that both the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans have held trade dialogue with Boston.

It is unknown at this time to what extent these conversations have gone and what potential players and draft assets are being offered, but the Celtics have long held interest in Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III. He had been at the center of trade discussions across the league in the weeks leading up to the NBA Draft, with the Pelicans attempting to acquire a lottery pick.

The Minnesota Timberwolves were another team that recently spoke about Brown’s availability with the Celtics before finalizing a trade with the Charlotte Hornets for All-Star guard LaMelo Ball, according to The Athletic.

On Tuesday night after the first round of the NBA Draft, Stevens spoke about the ongoing rumors surrounding a potential Brown trade, citing that he remains “valued” by the organization.

“Jaylen Brown’s a big part of us,” Stevens said. “I’m never going to predict the future, but every indication, everything that I think about, over the past few years, has been building around those guys. And so, obviously, you never know. But at the same time, I think the one thing I want to make very clear is how valued he’s always been. And he’s been amazing. He’s been an amazing teammate and a great person to be around.

Stevens also went on to say how dialogue between the two sides has been fluid and that he and the team have been very upfront with Brown and his representation. He declined to provide specifics about the conversations that were had behind closed doors between him and the superstar wing.

“What I said is really true. I don’t love the fact that any time it’s a big, public thing. We try to keep things as close to the vest and as quiet as possible. The rumor mill is the rumor mill, and there’s going to be a lot of noise out there.”

Earlier this offseason, Brown said on his Twitch stream that if the decision were solely his, he would play in Boston for the “next 10 years.”

Whether or not Brown’s NBA future will be in Boston remains one of the biggest questions of the offseason.

After averaging 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game during the 2025-26 season, Brown finished sixth in the MVP voting and was named to the All-NBA Second Team for the second time in his career.

The 29-year-old star is entering the third year of his $285 million supermax contract extension valued at $57.1 million for the 2026-27 season, and he will be eligible to receive a two-year, $142 million extension from the Celtics starting on July 26.

Conversations regarding Brown’s future are expected to continue past the start of free agency on June 30 and into NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, which begins on July 9.
