Falcons rumors: Tua Tagovailoa will be Week 1 starter over Michael Penix Jr., but there’s a catch

Who will be the Atlanta Falcons’ starting quarterback in Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season? That will be Tua Tagovailoa, barring injury, but that doesn’t mean he’s taken the job from Michael Penix Jr., as insider Ian Rapoport explained on Sunday.

“Atlanta is a weird [QB] battle, because it really isn’t a battle. I’ll start with Michael Penix Jr., the former first-rounder who is recovering from a torn ACL. He has not been fully cleared, and he has not been in team reps,” Rapaport said on NFL Network. “He’s really not fully practicing. This is not a competition until he is fully practicing.”

Rapoport then explained the catch to Tagovailoa being the Falcons’ starter for now.

“My sense is, Tua’s the Week 1 starter. He’ll go out there and play. If he continues to play well, then he’ll be the guy until he’s not. At some point, as an organization, you’d like to see Michael Penix Jr. play, you’d like to see if he is the franchise guy … so my sense is, both will end up playing.”

This is a tough spot for the Falcons to be in entering the 2026 NFL season. You can quibble whether, talent-wise, either Tagovalioa or Penix are starting NFL QBs, but putting that aside, these two are among the biggest QB injury risks in the league.

Penix is now recovering from his third ACL surgery after tearing the ligament twice in college. Even if he does come back with the peak of his powers intact, there are legitimate and major questions as to whether or not his knees will hold up for one more season, let alone several.

As for Tagovailoa, the former Miami Dolphins signal-caller has four documented concussions in his college and pro career, and there’s a real chance he’s had several more. There have been some incredibly scary moments in Tua’s career with head injuries, and one more could (and probably should) end his NFL career.
