Isaiah Stewart takes jabs at Pistons after Grizzlies trade, Jalen Duren drama
With the Detroit Pistons trading Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies back in late June, he was one of several pieces the team moved on from. As rumors continue to surround the Pistons and Jalen Duren and whether a split is coming soon, Stewart would speak about the deteriorating relationship with the franchise that led to the trade.
Stewart was traded to Memphis for three future second-round picks, as in his interview with Andscape, he called last season with Detroit “bittersweet.”
Getting 60 wins and earning the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, Stewart had the intention of helping bring back a tough identity to the Pistons. While the regular season showed that, it didn’t display as well in the playoffs, losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games in the semifinals.
Speaking more about Detroit, Stewart would speak on feeling unappreciated, expressing that he felt his time with the franchise was coming to an end.
“I was in a situation where you will work so hard, and you have a goal, you are putting your all into something, and you’re not able to get a certain opportunity or reap that kind of reward,” Duren said.

Receiving holistic care in Mexico on June 24, Stewart would get the call from his agent that a trade was likely to happen, with the expected teams at the time being the Los Angeles Lakers and the Washington Wizards. The Pistons would then get a trade that they “can’t turn down” from the Grizzlies, and while surprising, he was happy to feel wanted.
“I’m thankful because I’m somewhere where I’m really wanted. And the fanbase already respects and loves who I am. I’d rather be where I’m wanted than headed back into a situation where it’s not the best.”
Regarding the contract situation with his now-former teammate in Duren, Stewart would call it “tricky,” but that he has “proved he’s worth what he’s asking for.” With Stewart starting a new chapter in Memphis, it remains to be seen if Duren stays with Detroit.
