Monta Ellis destroyed for claiming he would’ve won titles in place of Stephen Curry on Warriors

Ex-Golden State Warriors star Monta Ellis is back in basketball news for taking the Alcorn State basketball general manager position. The news was reported by ESPN, but the former NBA player’s new title wasn’t the biggest story to emerge from a recent Ellis interview. The former combo guard was well regarded for his scoring prowess, but his reflection on his playing days came with some questionable statements. In particular, Ellis made it clear that he could have had the same championship success that his former teammate, Stephen Curry, had, if the Warriors’ developmental program was better during his early playing days.

“That’s what I dealt with. And people know that,” the former Most Improved Player said. “Real people that know basketball and all that, they know that. They know the team that I was dealt with. If you switched me and Steph out with the team that won championships, it’s be the same thing. So you’ve got to take the good with the bad, and that’s cool. It put me in a position to make money for me and my family. I ran with that.”

Ellis was undoubtedly a great player. He averaged 17.8 points per game over his career and was the Warriors’ best player before Curry became the all-time great that all basketball fans have come to know. For the new Alcorn State staffer, assuming he could have had the same success as the NBA’s best 3-point shooter ever may have been a stretch, and Ellis was flamed for his comments in social media.

The 12-year NBA veteran was a classic example of the dynasty starts after you, not with you.  The Warriors’ trade of Ellis proves that, as Andrew Bogut joined the team in the deal that sent Ellis packing, and the center won a championship with the team. Regardless, Ellis was a great NBA player, and it would be a cool story to see him find success at Alcorn State.
