Shaq sends scary Victor Wembanyama warning to Thunder

Tuesday night will be a pivotal one for the Oklahoma City Thunder, as they will look to weather injury woes and bounce back from their horrid performance on Sunday night to try and claim Game 5 of their Western Conference Finals clash against the San Antonio Spurs. The Thunder could have some injury woes to weather as well, with Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell dealing with lower-body injuries, making the task at hand that much more difficult.

The Spurs appear to have learned their lesson, as they chose not to give the Thunder role players space to make the impact they made through the first three games of the series all while focusing their defensive coverage on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Moreover, Victor Wembanyama was back to being his dominant scoring self, recording 33 points and eight boards on 11-22 shooting from the field.

For Shaquille O’Neal, it is imperative for the Thunder to slow Wembanyama’s roll, as he believes that if the Spurs star were to pop off once more, they will be in a world of danger.

“None of that matters if my guy gets 30-40 points. If my guy is dominating like that, OKC don’t have a chance. Cause Chet ain’t going to do nothing,” O’Neal said on ESPN’s Inside the NBA.

This is a direct challenge towards Chet Holmgren, who hasn’t been at his best in this series. Holmgren hasn’t been able to use his size and speed for a big man to punish the Spurs defense, as San Antonio has the perfect man to cover the Thunder big man.

While Shai Gilgeous-Alexander did vow that the Thunder will be involving Holmgren more on offense, it’s on defense where Holmgren’s role become all the more important. He and Isaiah Hartenstein have to be at their best in containing Wembanyama, and that for sure is going to be a huge part of their game plan later tonight.
