Shakur Stevenson eyed for fight by British world champion to ‘roll back Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton days’

Dalton Smith believes a showdown with Shakur Stevenson would bring back glory days of the past in Las Vegas.

Stevenson is one of the sport’s biggest stars right now and one of the best pound-for-pound current operators.

His profile propelled into the stratosphere with victory over Teofimo Lopez, and he has now signed with Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing.

The Newark native has been linked with fights against the likes of Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis, but the pair look to be unavailable as of now.

However, rising British star Smith, who has risen up to super-lightweight world glory, believes he could be the man for the job.

The Sheffield native, who secured the WBC super-lightweight title with a stunning win over Subriel Matias, believes a fight would make perfect sense.

He told talkSPORT: “All respect to Shakur.

“I’ve known him from the amateurs, and we’ve said our back and forth.

“He’s one hell of a fighter. But if we can get a fight made, of course I’m grabbing it with both hands, and I’ve got the big belief I’m going to beat him.

“That’s a fight for me that rolls back the Ricky Hatton-Mayweather days.

“You want that big American name so getting that over here or in Vegas would be a dream come true.”

Hatton famously took an army of fans over to Las Vegas where he took on boxing legend Mayweather in Sin City in 2007.

It was a battle of the unbeaten fighters, and despite Hatton being stopped in the tenth round, he gained huge notoriety and further global popularity from the huge event.

Smith – Puello is tough fight but I’ll prove myself

Before any clash with Stevenson, Smith must first beat tough challenger Alberto Puello in their rescheduled clash on October 24.

It is a stern test, but one he feels he wants to take to make yet another statement.

He continued: “I’m a real fighter. It’s no easy task.

“I get written off in the fight for the world title, and this is just another opportunity to prove myself.
