Sunday is a standout day in the opening weekend of the Premier League with five of the six teams in action having qualified for European football this season, the other having reached the last 16 of the Champions League last time out.

The action starts at 2pm as Manchester City and Bournemouth at the Etihad while Aston Villa head to the south coast to take on Brighton.

It wil be Man City’s first league match since without Pep Guardiola at the helm since May 2016, with Enzo Maresca taking charge of his first game at the Etihad Stadium since being appointed the Spaniard’s successor.

City will be out for revenge against the Cherries on Sunday as it was the same opposition who ended their title challenge next season after securing a draw against the Cityzens in the penultimate game of last season.

On the Sussex coast, Brighton, who started their season on Thursday night with a Conference League qualifier in Norway against Tromso, welcome Aston Villa to the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls secured a top eight finish on the final day of last season to seal a second ever season in European competition, and will come up against an Aston Villa side who have been torn apart in the summer transfer window.

Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne have all had their departures confirmed, with Ezri Konsa seemingly joining them imminently, while Emi Martinez and Ollie Watkins have also been rumoured to be joining the exit door.

That would leave six of the starting XI from their Europa League final victory over Freiburg in Istanbul at the end of last season having left the club.

The standout game of the weekend sees Newcastle and Liverpool go head to head at St James’ Park.

There has also been a mass exodus on Tyneside this summer, with Anthony Gordon, Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali all having left for pastures new, while Eddie Howe also made a surprise exit from the club and has since been replaced by former Al Ahli boss Matthias Jaissle.
