Seahawks rumors: Insider’s Devon Witherspoon contract update isn’t promising
Two months ago, the Seattle Seahawks laid the groundwork for their future by exercising the fifth-year contract options for wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and cornerback Devon Witherspoon, locking them in through the 2027-28 season.
While this move set the stage for long-term stability, subsequent extension talks have yielded contrasting results.
In March, the front office seamlessly finalized a record-setting four-year, $168.6 million extension with Smith-Njigba without a hint of drama.
However, securing a deal for their three-time Pro Bowl cornerback and Super Bowl LX standout has proved much more difficult.
According to an ESPN report, contract negotiations with Witherspoon are not progressing as smoothly.
Although Seattle extended an initial offer several weeks ago, a league source revealed that the two sides are still not close to an agreement.
Insiders speculate the slow pace could be linked to Witherspoon’s representation, WIN Sports Group, which is simultaneously handling extension talks for New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
Fortunately, time remains on Seattle’s side; Witherspoon has two years left on his rookie deal, and the franchise typically finalizes veteran extensions when training camp arrives in two months.
In the meantime, Witherspoon is demonstrating total professionalism. Team photos show him smiling and actively participating in the voluntary offseason program.
Reporters will soon get a direct look at the roster’s chemistry, as the Seahawks’ upcoming organized team activities on May 26, June 3, and June 4, followed by mandatory minicamp from June 9-11, will finally be open to the media.
