Seahawks GM explains why Seattle signed Terrion Arnold despite allegations

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider offered insight into the team’s decision to sign Terrion Arnold despite the serious legal allegations facing the young cornerback. The Seahawks officially signed Arnold on Saturday after agreeing to terms with the former Detroit Lions first-round pick earlier this month.

Arnold is facing eight felony charges stemming from allegations tied to a February incident in Florida, and he has maintained his innocence. He is currently on the NFL’s Commissioner’s Exempt List and cannot practice or play while the legal process continues.

For Seattle, however, the decision to bring Arnold into the organization was based heavily on the person the team believed it knew through its scouting and evaluation process.

Schneider explained that the team’s research and conversations about Arnold did not match the character portrayed by the allegations.

“And he has a great relationship with the organization,” Schneider told reporters. “The character just, you know, it just didn’t really fit with the allegations and everybody we’ve talked to.”

That evaluation appears to have played a significant role in Seattle’s willingness to take a chance on Arnold. The Seahawks had already developed a strong opinion of him during the 2024 NFL Draft process, when he was ultimately selected 24th overall by Detroit. Head coach Mike Macdonald previously said the organization felt strongly about Arnold during that evaluation and understood the seriousness of his current legal situation.

Schneider also made it clear that the Seahawks are not viewing Arnold’s addition as a short-term experiment. Instead, the organization believes the move could pay off down the road.

“But yes, there’s a, it’s a, this is a long-term play,” Schneider said.

Arnold will be able to remain around the Seahawks despite being unable to practice or play. Schneider confirmed that the cornerback can participate in meetings and train while his situation unfolds.

The 23-year-old cornerback gives Seattle another intriguing young talent to work with whenever he is cleared to return. Arnold started 17 games as a rookie in 2024 and made 50 tackles with two interceptions, showing the potential that made him a first-round selection.

For now, the Seahawks must wait for the legal process and the NFL’s determination before Arnold can return to the field. But Schneider’s comments make the organization’s stance clear: Seattle believes the person it evaluated before the draft is different from the picture painted by the allegations, and it is willing to bet on that assessment for the long term.
