Ryan Clark urges WNBA to promote its stars, ignore ‘people seeking attention’

The playoffs in the WNBA are just around the corner, yet the league continues to deal with the outside noise surrounding its eligibility rules.

Many athletes and personalities have spoken up in support of the WNBA and the transgender community after former NBA players Enes Kanter and Royce White, seemingly out of nowhere, made controversial stunts to mock the league.

Last week, Kanter was ejected from the game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky at Wintrust Arena after a heated spat with Natasha Cloud and was subsequently banned, while White sought attention during the game between the Fever and the Connecticut Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday.

Amid the issue, “The Pivot’s” Ryan Clark urged the WNBA to ignore the unnecessary noise and focus on promoting its stars.

“It’s about the faces of the league now, and how do we amplify their voices and stop having conversations about ghosts at the moment? Because there are people seeking attention because they no longer have it,” said Clark.

I won’t speak the names of those irrelevant to the WNBA conversation, nor will I give life to a debate that hasn’t defined this league across 30 years of existence. There’s too much happening on the court to be distracted by noise from those looking for a moment.

He mentioned recent storylines that the WNBA should be highlighting instead of being sucked into a “make-believe issue.”

“We should be talking about the fact that Sydney Taylor has gone from undrafted player to clutch bucket-maker in the most important moments for her team. That Natasha Cloud, just three games before the incident happened, had 35 points, and she was looking for a team this offseason,” said Clark.

“Caitlin Clark, on that very night, hit eight three-pointers. This is somebody who’s in the MVP conversations, one of the faces of your league, and instead of talking about that, uplifting her and her game, you’re now dealing with nonsense and having to have conversations about that. Angel Reese went for 31 points two games ago and had 26 rebounds in the next game to break a record.”

Clark added that the WNBA should make it clear it is standing tall with its players, reassuring them of its mission to protect them.

The WNBA formed a task force to review its eligibility rules, while the WNBA Players Association reiterated the value of inclusivity and diversity.
