The second matchweek of the season opened with a bang at Selhurst Park as Manchester City cruised to a 4-1 win over Crystal Palace.

Liverpool and Nottingham Forest could not be separated at Anfield in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, as they played out a 2-2 draw.

But the contest was not without controversy, as new Forest record signing Liam Delap’s throw-in that led to Neco Williams winning a penalty appeared to be a foul throw, yet VAR could not intervene.

Everton had James Tarkowski to thank as his 91st-minute equaliser helped the Toffees secure a 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth, denying new Cherries boss Marco Rose his first Premier League win.

The occasion of Coventry City’s first Premier League home game in 25 years was spoiled by Hull’s Liam Millar, as his late strike earned the Tigers a valuable 1-0 victory.

Tottenham rounded off Saturday’s action in dismal fashion, as they were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle.

And didn’t the travelling Geordies let £100million man Sandro Tonali know about the result, with the Italian greeted by loud boos every time he touched the ball.

On Sunday, Chelsea beat Brighton 4-3 despite boasting 25 per cent possession at Stamford Bridge.

And no, that’s not a typo.

Leeds and Brentford played out a 1-1 draw while Wilson Isidor came off the bench to bag the winner for Sunderland as they overcame Fulham 1-0.

Manchester United completed Sunday’s billing in thrilling fashion, beating Ipswich 5-2.

Bruno Fernandes may have grabbed the headlines thanks to his scintillating hat-trick, but it was another Red Devil who looked extremely classy.

Jakirovic may have been an unknown name to most Premier League fans before the start of the season, but he’s well on his way to winning the manager of the month award.

The Hull boss has masterminded two wins from two, including the club’s first win over Manchester United since 1974.

Victory over Coventry maintained the Tigers’ perfect start to the campaign, marking just the fourth time a promoted team has won their first two matches of a Premier League campaign and the first since Huddersfield Town in 2017.

Hull’s dream start under Jakirovic prompted Deeney to hail him as ‘excellent’, although there is a long, long way to go in the season.

Kobbie Mainoo

Not even a hat-trick from Fernandes could sway Alex Crook from labelling Kobbie Mainoo as his hero from the weekend.

Mainoo more than made the most of his first start for United this season with an all-action display for the Red Devils against Ipswich.

The midfielder made 14 defensive contributions and won nine of his 12 duels, providing a timely reminder of his talents after not featuring at all for England at the World Cup.

Time will tell whether Mainoo can lock down his spot in the starting line-up following United’s midfield revolution this summer, but his performance against Ipswich has done him plenty of favours.

Rayan Cherki

Watching Rayan Cherki play football truly is a joyous experience.

The Frenchman has a penchant for the spectacular, whether that be in the form of his mazy dribbling, luscious first touch or vital goals.

“He is the most entertaining player to watch in the league right now,” Matterface said.

“Enzo Maresca, if you don’t pick him every week, what are you doing?”

Deeney added: “He’s my favourite player to watch in world football. Just that ability to take the ball in any way, shape or form it is thrown at him.”

Those situated up in the International Space Station may have got a fright when they saw a flash of white whizz past.

But they need not fear, for it was not a meteor.

Instead, it was Mathys Tel’s free-kick that flew high and wide of the goal against Newcastle.

It was an act that summed up Spurs’ evening on Saturday as they sank to their 11th loss at home since the start of last season.

“I’ve never seen a worse free-kick in my life,” Deeney said.

“And then, to have the nerve to look at the ground, at the best pitch in the country?”

Ryan Christie and Marcus Tavernier

Bournemouth duo Ryan Christie and Marcus Tavernier won’t want to watch a replay of James Tarkowski’s late equaliser any time soon.

As a corner came in from the left at the Vitality, Christie and Tavernier bumped into each other.

The ball then bounced off Tavernier’s head and right into the path of Tarkowski, who lashed home from close range.

Christie and Tavernier could only look at one another with their arms outstretched in frustration, knowing the error allowed a valuable three points to slip.

“Bournemouth should have won that game,” Crook said.

Jacob Greaves

Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves went into Sunday’s fixture with aspirations of pocketing United’s attackers.

Instead, Greaves had an afternoon to forget.

The 25-year-old contributed to the 5-2 scoreline with an own goal and by giving away a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes happily dispatched.

Greaves’ nightmare performance meant he was just the second player in history to score an own goal and concede a penalty against United at Old Trafford in the Premier League, with Jan Bednarek the only other player to have done so.

Alarmingly, Greaves completed the unfortunate double act in the space of two minutes and 45 seconds.

“He was stinking,” Deeney said.
