Russell Martin’s Leicester tenure threatens to turn toxic with shock home league defeat

Leicester City have continued their worrying start to the season with a dismal defeat against Burton Albion.

The Foxes, who were crowned Premier League champions ten years ago, remain winless in League One and conceded after five minutes.

Matthew Dennis was on hand to put Burton ahead at the King Power Stadium from inside the area to leave the hosts stunned.

A defensive mess then led to Kegs Chauke netting the second, before Oliver Skipp was sent off to send Leicester down to ten men.

Leicester fans made their feelings known with boos, and some even chanted ‘You’re not fit to wear the shirt’.

Wes Burns managed to pull one back on the stroke of half-time to salvage some pride in what was otherwise a shocking first-half.

But they failed to equalise during the second and have therefore just picked up one point from a possible six, with boos ringing out once again at the full-time whistle.

Russell Martin will already be under pressure as manager, just weeks after taking the job, following the defeat.

He won his first match in charge with a 1-0 victory over Northampton in the Carabao Cup first round.

However, they had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Notts County in their league opener after a poor defensive showing led to a late equaliser.

Defeat against Burton only adds to the uncertainty over the future of the club.

Leicester owners King Power have recently put them up for sale, and are expected to bank in excess of £200million.

Scottish-Indian businessman Neil Lal has announced that he is eyeing a potential purchase via a consortium.

Back on the pitch, Leicester will be desperate to secure promotion back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

However, as it stands, they are potentially on course for what would be an unprecedented battle against relegation to League Two.

Their latest result puts them 18th in the table and just one point off the bottom four on goal difference.
