Ex-Championship player Quevin Castro dies aged 25 after collapsing in friendly

Former West Brom player Quevin Castro has tragically died at the age of 25.

Castro collapsed during a training match while playing for third-tier Portuguese side Real Sport Clube (Massama) on Saturday.

Primeira Liga club Estrela da Amadora hosted the friendly in Malveira and Castro was taken ill in the tenth minute.

A club doctor made attempts to revive the player with a defibrillator and the INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergency) was called.

The Portuguese midfielder was taken to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Estrela de Amadora expressed their condolences in an official statement on their website.

The club said: “Estrela da Amadora hereby expresses its deepest condolences for the passing of Quévin Castro, a player for Real Massamá.

“At this moment of profound sadness, Estrela da Amadora extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Quévin Castro, as well as to the entire Real Massamá structure.

“Our thoughts are with all those who were close to him.

“Rest in peace, Quévin.”

His former club, Isthmian League Premier side Eastbourne Borough, paid tribute on social media.

“Rest in Peace, Quevin.”

Castro was most recently at the seventh-tier English side before returning to his homeland earlier this summer.

Having been born in Portugal, he grew up in Norfolk and went to school at Thetford Academy.

He also played for West Brom, Burton, Notts County, York City and Cambridge City during his time in English football.

Castro also spent time on trial with Arsenal and Chelsea.
